Sheila Fleming heads up Human Resources for Liberty Information Technology (LIT), a subsidiary of the US company Liberty Mutual Group. LIT employs around 190 staff in Belfast and has a turnover of some £10 million. Sheila Fleming is a dynamic lady who joined LIT when it was set up in 1997 as part of a small team. LIT provides high quality and high value software development services and solutions, exclusively to business groups across Liberty Mutual, a global provider of insurance products and other financial services.
The company is one of Northern Ireland’s big success stories of the last decade. "When the opportunity to join Liberty came up, I jumped at the chance to be part of something new and exciting" says Sheila.
"One of our biggest challenges in the beginning was recruiting and retaining staff in what proved to be a rising market".
"Competition for IT graduates was very strong and we had to continually refine and improve our recruitment and retention strategies to stay ahead of the competition".
Taking an enterprising and creative approach to her work has been a constant of Sheila's career, and she has built up a reputation for developing innovative ways of ensuring Liberty has the highest quality workforce. Sheila believes that it’s important to keep challenging yourself and to keep wanting to improve.
"Most of all I would say never settle for less, or become complacent. What is important for me is that I’m enjoying what I do and I’ll keep doing it until I stop enjoying it".
