Liberty IT student succeeds in UK Undergraduate of the Year Competition

September 17, 2010

Liberty IT Bursary student Craig Mc Carter, currently on his placement year, has been shortlisted in the UK Undergraduate of the Year Competition 2010.

Craig, who is studying Computer Science at Queen’s University Belfast, was one of ten finalists in the IT and Computer Science category. Competition organizers Target Jobs, and IT and Computer Science category sponsors the NHS, asked entrants to suggest ways of using social media to implement change in the health service. Ten shortlisted finalists were then invited to London to present their ideas to a panel from the NHS Institute.

Craig’s presentation focused on using the NHS intranet to improve communication across the entire organisation. “It was more relaxed than I expected,” he said. “I was able to learn quite a lot about customer requirements on the day through talking with the various panel members. This has boosted my confidence and is certainly an attractive addition to my CV.  I would encourage undergraduates to apply for this exciting competition.”

Liberty IT hires approximately ten Computer Science undergraduates each year onto their placement programme, which is aimed at developing key skills in the areas of team work, communications and software development. Students work in teams developing software applications for Liberty IT’s parent company, the Liberty Mutual Group.
