From Mechanical Engineer to Machine Learning: Darren’s Story

Friday, October 11, 2019

Just over six years ago, Darren Broderick joined Liberty IT as an Associate Software Engineer, through our graduate recruitment process. Darren’s primary degree had been in Mechanical Engineering, but he undertook the MSc conversion course at QUB, and was among the first graduates from this relaunched course (taught by one of the last graduates from the old course!).

Darren is one of the Outrun team, who have been taking part in the AWS Deepracer event within Liberty Mutual – they have made it through to the final eight and will be competing again at the end of October. To read loads more about this experience, check out Darren’s blog here.

Similar to what happens today, Darren attended recruitment fairs and our in-house careers event – this year’s Tech Carnival takes place in Belfast on 24 October and you can click here to find out more about the process for graduates and interns.

He says, ‘Anyone can do well in IT if you find a company where you can grow. I started in a small team and was given the opportunity to pilot and test agile processes, I applied and was successful for promotion earlier this year. I got my AWS certification and have helped colleagues to gain this too – I’ve been coached and am now coaching others.’

Darren had grown professionally by taking on new opportunities like Deepracer, and also stepping out of his comfort zone to speak at events. He has just been shortlisted for Young IT Professional of the Year at the Belfast Telegraph IT Awards, being held on 8 November, and is giving some of his own time to work with AbilityNet.

If you’re thinking of applying to Liberty IT, he says ‘Come to Tech Carnival and see our work and meet our team – especially if you’re interested in cloud and serverless technology.’
