National Apprentice Week: building careers in technology

We’ve always believed in creating opportunities that empower individuals to unlock their potential

Our TechStart Apprenticeship programme is a testament to that mission.

To celebrate National Apprentice Week, the biggest week in the apprentices and skills calendar, we sat down with Brea, one of our Apprentice Software Engineers. She told us more about her story, experiences and the programme’s benefits, and shared some advice for those considering a career in technology.

From TikTok to TechStart: Brea’s journey

Brea, what inspired you to join Liberty IT’s TechStart Apprenticeship programme?

It was a bit unexpected! I was scrolling on TikTok, and the apprenticeship came up on my For You Page. I’d always been interested in IT, as throughout school, I studied computer science and enjoyed working with computers. Seeing the opportunity with TechStart felt like the perfect next step to try to turn my passion into a career.

What has your experience been like so far?

Joining TechStart has been amazing, an incredible journey. You develop so many skills and the hands-on training really sets you up for success. The best part is learning from my colleagues—everyone is so helpful and supportive. If I’m ever stuck or need help balancing work and university commitments, there’s always someone there to support me. It’s such a collaborative and understanding environment.

Why the Liberty IT TechStart apprenticeship stands out

For those unfamiliar with the apprenticeships programme, it equips people with the skills and experience they need to thrive in the tech industry. Brea, based on your experiences, why should someone consider the programme?

The programme has given me the chance to work on innovative projects for Liberty Mutual and the skills I’ve gained are invaluable. You’re not just learning in a classroom - you’re applying what you learn in real-world scenarios, which makes a huge difference. Plus, the support system at Liberty IT is incredible. It’s been a great way to start my career in tech, I couldn’t recommend it enough.

Advice for aspiring apprentices

What advice would you give someone considering applying for Liberty IT’s apprenticeship?

Go for it! Don’t hesitate. Whether you’re passionate about technology or just curious, the apprenticeship is a fantastic way to explore and grow. You’ll learn so much, not just about IT or software engineering, but about yourself and what you’re capable of.

All part of building your career
