From Intern to Software Engineer: Andrew's Story

Friday, October 11, 2019

Andrew Coulter first came to Liberty IT as an Intern in the third year of his Computer Science degree at Ulster University, in 2017-18.

The experience he had made him sure he wanted to return after uni, so he applied to our graduate programme this time last year, and rejoined the company as an Associate Software Engineer after graduating.

Andrew was interviewed by Silicon Republic and you can watch the video on their website.

Since taking up his new role in July, he has taken part in Liberty IT's Training Academy and is putting all that knowledge into practice in his new team. He is particularly interested in AWS and Machine Learning, so wants to continue to avail of training opportunities, and to progress within the company through our self-nominated promotion process.

“I’d say the most important skill for working at Liberty IT is the ability to continuously learn. There’s a lot of new technologies here, most of which universities haven’t quite got around to teaching yet,” Coulter added.

“So it’s very important that you have the ability to learn new things and to be continuously learning, as things change so quickly in this environment.

“The thing I like most about working at Liberty IT is the technology, and there’s plenty of different types of work. There’s DevOps work, there’s front-end work, and working as an associate or an intern, you get exposure to all of them.”

Could this be you? We are currently recruiting for both graduate and intern roles. Click here to find out about the roles and how to apply.
