Tony Marron appointed Global Engineering Capability Lead at Liberty Mutual

Engineering excellence has always been shaped by people: by how they think, how they build and the standards they set for what technology can do. For Liberty IT Managing Director Tony Marron, that focus is now part of an expanded global remit.  

Tony has been appointed Global Engineering Capability Lead at parent company Liberty Mutual Insurance, extending his leadership across the Fortune 100 insurer’s global technology organisation while continuing to lead Liberty IT. 

A global remit, alongside continued leadership of Liberty IT  

Tony will continue to lead Liberty IT, where more than 900 employees work across the island of Ireland, with offices in Belfast, Dublin and Galway. Alongside this, he will help shape the strategic direction of engineering across Liberty Mutual, setting the practices and ways of working that will help define how AI reshapes customer and employee experience. 

Reporting to Liberty Mutual's Global Chief Information Officer, Monica Caldas, Tony will provide leadership and direction to more than 5,000 engineers worldwide. His focus will be on embedding a consistent approach to engineering excellence, culture and maturity across teams, and on advancing how technology is developed throughout the organisation. 

What the appointment means for engineering at Liberty Mutual 

Engineering is changing quickly as AI reshapes how technology is built, the skills teams need and the ways people work together. Tony’s expanded role takes a holistic view of engineering across Liberty Mutual’s global business, bringing together technology, talent and culture to strengthen how teams operate. 

That is the thinking behind the role: a recognition across Liberty Mutual that strong engineering capability, not AI alone, will be fundamental to the company’s continued success. 

Reflecting Liberty IT's global influence  

The appointment also reflects the role Liberty IT and its people already play within Liberty Mutual’s global technology organisation. Tony described it as a reflection of “the important role Liberty IT and our hugely talented people play within Liberty Mutual’s global technology organisation,” with the work ahead centred on advancing engineering excellence and on exploring and testing AI and agentic capabilities that can be applied across the business. 

Working more closely across Liberty Mutual’s global teams will mean sharing expertise, developing people and building greater consistency in the engineering practices that support innovation and delivery for customers, wherever in the world those teams sit. 

A career built at Liberty IT  

Tony brings extensive leadership and engineering experience to the global role. He joined Liberty IT as a software engineer in 2001 and progressed through a range of senior positions, including Senior Director of Emerging Business and Technology, before being appointed Managing Director in 2021. 

Twenty-five years on from that first engineering role, he said he hopes the appointment “demonstrates the opportunities available to our people, both within Liberty IT and across Liberty Mutual,” and spoke of being honoured to work with more than 5,000 engineers worldwide to raise the standard of how the organisation builds technology. 

His new role reflects a career built through technical experience, curiosity, leadership and the kind of long-term growth Liberty IT continues to support. 

Tony was also clear that the appointment reflects the work of the wider Liberty IT team and thanked Monica Caldas for her vision, support and encouragement in shaping the expanded role.

What comes next is not one change, but many connected ones, carried across a much bigger canvas: the same focus on engineering standards, the same curiosity about AI and agentic technology, and the same investment in people, now reaching teams across Liberty Mutual’s global business.
